Peru is a great big place and this makes it the perfect destination for anything from a short trip to an extended holiday. It has such a varied and beautiful terrain and truly many things that you won’t find anywhere else in the world. Here are a few of the special things that you can do on your South America Tour.
Peruvian Amazon Basin
This amazing place is about half an hour by flight from Cusco and is a huge contrast to many of the high areas of Peru. Here you will be greeted by the wonderful world of the green and wet Peruvian rain forest. This area has also become quite famous for eco tourism and there are a number eco lodgings to choose from in the area. You absolutely must visit Sandoval Lake, which offers a serene jungle experience, as well having giant otters and black caimans. There is also so much other wildlife to see in the area, and this area is possibly one of the most rich and diverse places for wildlife on the planet.
Visiting Peru of course means that you must also visit Machu Picchu and it is something you will never ever forget. Machu Picchu is perhaps one of the most stunning tourist attractions on the planet and represents a very interesting point in history for the Peruvian people. The city was relatively untouched by the Spanish when they invaded the country and it is the best example of an Inca city that still remains. If you want to really have the most authentic experience then take on the four day Inca trail and you will see things as the Incas would have.
Buy Pink Peruvian Salt
Peru is world famous for this salt and it comes from the Maras salt pools in the Sacred Valley (near Cusco and Machu Picchu). The salt comes from pools that are fed by a saltwater stream. The salt has been harvested since the time of the Incas and the pools also create a stunning contrast with the mountainous landscape. You can buy the salt very cheaply too!
Lima is a must visit destination and is home to numerous museums, the best of which is probably the Larco Museum. This former mansion was once the site of a pre-Colombian temple. It has a large collection of artifacts, like metals and ceramic objects. The museum also houses a good collection of mummies. Without a doubt the best thing about the museum is that they allow visitors to actually see the store rooms, where items that are not on display are kept.
