With wide open roads, cheap fuel, breathtaking distances and spectacular locations, the US is a country that was made for road trips. And whether journeys are on the scale of east to west or smaller trips taking in one or two states, there are beautiful vistas and fantastic spots to be found around every turn. Just book your car hire in America and you’re set.
Yellowstone National Park is consistently voted one of the top most beautiful spots in the US, for good reason. The Yellowstone Caldera, in Wyoming, is an awe-inspiring volcanic formation that breathes steam from its deep blue waters, in the form of geysers, hot springs and fumaroles. Also known as the Yellowstone Supervolcano, the caldera has been the source of numerous eruptions over around 18 million years, eruptions that were so powerful they caused the surrounding land to collapse and the eastern Snake River Plain to be formed.
Yosemite Valley, in California, is a glacial valley about eight miles long; towering to either side are granite cliffs, including the monolithic El Capitan. The jewel of Yosemite National Park, the valley is densely forested with pines and the home of some of the steepest gorges and highest waterfalls in the state. A network of hiking trails takes visitors to the most stunning spots in the valley.
No list of the most attractive locations in American would be complete without mention of the Grand Canyon. Located in the Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona, the canyon is one of the most iconic places in America. Its steep sides were carved out by the Colorado River over a period of about 17 million years; today, its landscape is almost overwhelming in its size and beauty.
Another spectacular location in the California area is Lake Tahoe; bordering both California and Nevada, this vast lake is 22 miles long and over 500 metres deep. With breathtaking views of the mountains and crystal clear waters, Lake Tahoe is a major attraction. Skiing takes place in the mountains throughout the winter.
In Utah, Bryce Canyon has to be one of the most incredible and ethereal sights in America. The distinctive sandstone pinnacles are known as hoodoos and were formed by erosion by frost and wind. The formations display many beautiful colours, with pinks and reds from hematite and limonite forming the yellows. The amazing arches, bridges and cliffs continue to draw visitors from afar, despite the remote location.
While the west has stunning geological formations, incredible canyons and volcanoes, the east has its share of beautiful locations. The Maine coastline is an extensive stretch, taking in gorgeous sandy beaches, picturesque lighthouses and panoramic vistas of the Atlantic Ocean.
Cape Cod in Massachusetts, meanwhile, has miles of nature trails winding along gorgeous coastal scenery as well as some great beaches. You can mess around on boats, bask in the summer rays or even go whale watching. Other great options for seaside fun, including kayaking and fishing, include the barrier islands of Chincoteague and Assateague, off Maryland and Virginia.
In Florida, there are many more beautiful beaches, with sugary white sands and warm waters. Here too, for the more adventurous, are the Everglades. This enormous area of subtropical wetland covers around 100 miles by 60 miles in the wet season, including cypress swamps and mangrove prairie along with hardwood hammocks and drier pineland.
Whether east or west, north or south, the US has something for everyone. Its natural attractions have to be amongst the best in the world; whether you are looking for magnificent canyons, tropical beaches or incredible forests, you can find them here.
